Building upon the successful
first meeting at Playa del Carmen, Mexico in December 2006, the second one at Crete, Greece in September 2008,
the third one in Gramado near Porto Alegre, Brazil in October 2010, and the fourth meeting in Padova, Italy in
September 2011, the fifth meeting will be held in Kona, Hawaii, USA between the 1st and 5th of July 2012.
It will be organized by the Nebraska Center for Energy Science Research of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Arizona State University, and chaired by
Michael Nastasi.
The focus of the 5th REM will be on the development and characterization of novel nanomaterials for energy
science applications as well as the application of ion beam interactions with matter.
|
The 5th REM will be organized to honor Jim Mayer for his many and important contributions in the field of the
ion-solid interactions, in particular for his pioneering work in the development of the solid-state detector,
the birth of the field of ion beam analysis of materials, and the pioneering of the application of ion
implantation to semiconductors. These interrelated advances changed the course of how low energy nuclear and
atomic physics were conducted, created an entirely new characterization tool for the study of thin film science,
and impacted all of the microelectronics industry. We will pay tribute to Jim and the work he carried while a
Professor at Caltech, Cornell and Arizona State Universities.
