Vision

"To provide the UK with a world-leading Centre for research in ion beam applications"

Strategy

The Ion Beam Centre has undergone a major revision of its strategic planning process. It has adopted a three-pronged approach by:

  • seeking input from the UK academic and industrial communities;
  • evaluating international developments;
  • a focussed internal review.
The following sections show how this has been implemented in practice.

Input from the UK Community
Input from the UK academic and industrial communities occurs via the following mechanisms:
  • the IBC steering committee provides a dynamic interchange of ideas and feedback.
  • biennial community meetings - in collaboration with the Institute of Physics - aim to engage the wider ion beam community in the UK particularly with an eye to encouraging new users;
  • extensive discussion with users of the facilities, via the liaison activities enables the requirements for improved precision and/or accuracy or for the development of new or upgraded capabilities to be identified and implemented;
  • technology transfer projects with industry ensure that the Centre keeps up to date with the requirements of industry and allows an industrial perspective on new developments.
Evaluating International Developments
Input from the international community occurs via the following mechanisms:
  • discussions with the international community, via collaboration, conferences, laboratory visits and from papers presented in the literature, are used, proactively to inform new developments that can be made which will improve and/or extend the facilities of the Centre.
  • European representation on the Steering Committee.
Internal Review
  • A rolling development document for the Ion Beam Centre facilities has been created.
  • Formal internal meetings allow the plan to develop.
  • Enhanced internal quality assurance programmes and additional monthly quality assurance meetings highlight areas that require improvement, both in metrication and in processing.
The strategic plans are continually reviewed at internal monthly meetings and discussed on a six monthly basis with the Centre's steering committee.  An update on strategy is made at the annual users' workshop (usually held in March/April) where users are also encouraged to input their views.

The Ion Beam Centre's Strategic plan is informed and guided by the School and University strategic plans and also by Governmental and EPSRC strategic thinking.
